The history of stained-glass:

Stained glass is a form of art that has been around for over a thousand years. Its origins can be traced back to the early medieval period, specifically in Europe during the 12th century. The technique was initially developed by monks who used colored glasses and metals to create images on windows for their churches.

The process involves cutting pieces of glass into various shapes and sizes, painting them with a mixture of metallic oxides called “paints,” and then firing the glass in a kiln at high temperatures. Once cooled, these painted pieces are assembled together using lead strips to create intricate designs on windows or other surfaces.

Stained glass gained popularity during the Gothic period (12th-16th centuries) when artists began to use more elaborate and detailed designs, as well as a wider range of colors. This led to the creation of some of the most famous stained glass works in history, such as those found in the cathedrals of Chartres, Reims, and Notre Dame in France.

Throughout its long history, stained glass has been used not only for religious purposes but also for decorating secular buildings like palaces, castles, and private homes. The technique was later adopted by artists during the Art Nouveau movement (late 19th-early 20th centuries) who created stunning works of art that combined natural forms with geometric patterns.

Today, stained glass continues to be a popular form of artistic expression in various architectural and decorative applications, from windows and doors to lamps and jewelry. Modern artists have adapted the traditional techniques by using new materials and methods, such as fusing glasses together or incorporating other mediums like photography and digital printing.

Ethical Note: This LoRA was trained on a over 200 CC0/Public Domain photos from various online outlets. Yet it was impossible to get permission for each of the artists who created the stained-glass in the first place. It is up to all of us to establish where our ethical boundaries are with this technology.
