About the character
Karol Cariola is a Chilean midwife and politician, member of the Communist Party of Chile (PCCh). She is currently serving as a deputy of the Republic, representing the 9th district of the Metropolitan Region of Santiago1 She was re-elected with the national majority in the 2021 legislative election.
Cariola was born on April 1, 1987 in Santiago, Chile. She joined the Communist Youth (JJCC) at the age of 16 and became part of its Central Committee in 2007. She was president of the Student Federation of the University of Concepción (FEC) between 2009 and 2010, and one of the national spokeswomen of the National Confederation of Students of Chile (CONFECH) in 2009.
She was also one of the main figures of the student protests of 20111 Cariola was elected as a deputy for the first time in 2013, with the highest district majority, for the then district No. 19 (corresponding to the communes of Recoleta and Independencia), for the legislative period 2014-20181 In 2017, she was re-elected as a deputy, again with the highest district majority, this time for the new district No. 9, for the period 2018-20221
Cariola is also affiliated with the Group of Puebla, a progressive political forum in Latin America3 She recently expressed her admiration and gratitude to Guillermo Teillier, the historic leader of the PCCh, who died on August 29, 2023.
